Choosing & Installing A Theme For Your Blog

Having the ability to completely change the way your blog looks with a couple of clicks on your mouse is what makes WordPress one of the most popular CMS platforms on the market.

In this tutorial, we’re going to have a look at how you can quickly change your site’s appearance using both free and paid themes, where to find them & how to install them.

First, log in to your WP dashboard, click on Appearance and then select »Themes«:

As you can see, there are several things we can do here. We can either configure existing themes (widgets, menus, options…), or we can install new ones. If we choose to install a new theme, we must first click the »Install Themes« tab and then we have 2 choices:

  • Upload them from our own PC/Computer
  • Search for them using the Free WP theme database

That’s right, WordPress has a powerful integrated search engine which allows us to browse thousands of free themes according to our criteria (colors, columns, subject, features, etc)!

Simply select your preferences and then click »Find Themes«. You will be able to preview each one of them before you choose to install them.

Installation is also very simple. Once you’ve found a perfect theme of your choice, simply hit the »Install« button. Now that your theme is successfully installed, you can hit »Activate«.

– Your theme is now activated and you can see how it looks by refreshing your website!

If you can’t find a suitable theme, try typing »Free WP Themes« in Google, and you’ll find a huge number of websites offering free WP themes, so feel free to knock yourself out.

Quick tip: If you choose to download WP themes from 3rd party sources, you will need to install them by following these 3 simple steps:

1) Select »Install Themes« tab and then click on »Upload«

2) Locate the theme you downloaded on your hard disk. It has to be in the RAR (ZIP) format, if it is not – it won’t work!

3) Press »Install Now«

That’s it, it can’t get any easier than that, can it?

I recommend you spend some time looking for a good theme that will meet all of your requirements – it’s well worth it in the long run.

Setting Up Your Newly Installed Theme

Once you install and activate a theme, you should be able to access its settings here:

Hint: Some themes may have their control panel located in a different place, so be sure to read the author’s info and FAQ before installation.

Depending on its capabilities and features, each theme has different settings options, but usually they’re very easy to understand and configure.

Whats The Difference Between Free And Paid Themes

Free themes are generally used by people who don’t have large requirements for their website and want to get going as quickly as possible.

However, if you do not trust free theme providers or you would like more features and a nicer looking template, you can always choose to go with paid themes – the choice is yours!

Some of the best paid themes providers I’ve come across are the following:

  1. Studio Press
  2. Elegant Themes
  3. Woo Themes
  4. Theme Forest

Here are some examples of the types of themes you can get (remember – they are 100% customizable!):

Studio Press Themes: (

Elegant Themes: (

Whether you choose to go the free way or the paid way – you won’t be disappointed with the amount of different themes at your disposal.

Once again, configuration of WP themes (although different for every theme) is generally very straightforward and easy to understand, however, if you have any problems with it, you can simply contact the theme author or read their FAQ page.

Thank you and I hope you enjoyed this brief tutorial!
